The problem
A workable but closed kitchen with too little counter surface and a dining area that felt like a separate, slightly awkward room.
What we did
Rebuilt the kitchen around a granite-topped island sized for seating, kept the cabinetry light to hold the brightness of the room, and used a grey mosaic backsplash as the one place with texture.
The detail we would point at
The pendant lighting. Bubble glass over the counter run — the fixture that makes the room feel considered rather than assembled from a catalog.
